Today, I explored a fascinating abandoned hiking trail not too far from home. The Mud Lake Nature Trail in Quispamsis, New Brunswick is a forgotten path through woods and wetlands. Once a community nature trail, it now sits quietly abandoned, slowly being reclaimed by the forest.
The highlight of the walk is the series of old wooden boardwalks, built years ago to cross over the wetland. Over time, without maintenance, these boardwalks have heaved, tilted, and sunk into the ground, creating an almost eerie reminder of how quickly nature takes back what we leave behind.
Along the forest paths, I passed a number of dilapidated benches that clearly haven’t been sat on in years. Their weathered wood and crooked angles of these resting spots relics add to the trail’s fascination.
Exploring the Mud Lake Trail today, I couldn’t help but think about how many people must have once enjoyed this local hiking spot in Quispamsis—families, walkers, birdwatchers—and how different it looks now after years of neglect. It’s a place that feels both forgotten and beautiful at the same time, perfect for those who love discovering hidden trails. It’s a shame it has been so severely let go.
