It’s Time to Paint the Den and Mud Room

Over the last couple of years (hard to believe it’s been that long) we’ve been renovating the rooms in the lower level of Rockton Lodge (that’s what we call our home).

This is the last room to be done in the lower level. Years ago it was a garage, and then a workshop, and then a rec room. We are transforming it once again, this time turning it into a home theatre den at one end and a spacious mud room on the other side, divided by a wall and closet space.

There were lots of complications to contend with, from two electrical panels and an uneven dropped floor to exposed wiring conduit and plumbing. So we got creative with the drywall to box in the infrastruture. It has been a big job, but it’s so going to be worth it in the end.

We did our own framing (my dad came to help with that, which was fun) and we manage our own drywall hanging, plumbing and electrical. (Multipotentiality for the win.) For the crack filling, we’ve got a trusty guy who comes and takes are of that for us. He wrapped up this week, so we’re on to paint!

We had an original goal when we bought this house two years ago of finishing the renovations in 12 to 18 months. We are well beyond that timeframe now, but we’re totally OK with that. Life is a journey, not a race.

Here is the current state of things.

This stacked stone wall covers a cinder-block base to the large chimney at the centre of the home. We didn’t install the stone, and it could have looked very out-of-place in the room since we removed the wood stove that used to sit here, but we decided to keep it and get creative with it. What would you do with this area?
This space is full of doors. One leading to the back yard, one to the laundry room, one to the new garage, and one to the foyer. As you entered the room from three of the doors, there was an immediate step down to a lower landing and then a step down from there. To make it safer, we raised both landings and placed the steps down further into the room. And then to take safety to the next level, we added step lights that will automatically come on at night, so there’s no more entering a room in darkness not knowing the floor drops down.

I’ll post some of the progress and finished photos once we complete this project.

Welcome to my blog.

This blog breaks rules. It doesn’t focus on just one theme and I don’t post to it on a consistent schedule. That’s OK. It’s my blog. Not yours.

But you’re here! If you think you can piece together what it all means, I’d be curious to know your conclusions.
